About Resident Evil

Resident Evil is an upcoming English-language horror film directed by Zach Cregger, who co-wrote the screenplay with Shay Hatten. The movie serves as the second reboot and the eighth installment in the Resident Evil film franchise, which is based on Capcom’s popular Resident Evil video game series. Set in a modern-day Raccoon City while drawing inspiration from the events of Resident Evil 2 (1998), the story follows Bryan, played by Austin Abrams, a medical courier whose routine delivery takes a terrifying turn when a viral outbreak unleashes infected creatures across the city. Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, Johnno Wilson and Paul Walter Hauser appear in supporting roles.

Resident Evil is scheduled to make its world premiere at the 21st Fantastic Fest on September 17, 2026. The film is then set to receive a theatrical release in the United States on September 18, 2026, through Sony Pictures Releasing.

Plot

Bryan, a medical courier, is making a delivery to Raccoon City General Hospital when a sudden outbreak turns his routine assignment into a fight for survival. As the infection spreads and dangerous creatures emerge, he must battle his way through the chaos to stay alive.

Exclusive Interview Zach Cregger & Austin Abrams

Austin Abrams marks his 30th birthday with a conversation alongside ET’s Deidre Behar and his director from ‘Resident Evil’ and ‘Weapons,’ Zach Cregger. During the discussion, they delve into a near-fatal incident that occurred on the set of ‘Resident Evil,’ while Zach shares his decision to avoid watching previous films in the franchise prior to directing this installment. He humorously suggests the possibility of infusing a horror twist into his wife Sara Paxton’s 2006 teen film ‘Aquamarine’ and describes his eagerly awaited prequel ‘Weapons,’ centered on Aunt Gladys, as a revenge narrative. ‘Resident Evil’ is set to premiere in theaters on September 18.
